Most Walpole High sports teams develop rivalries with other towns — whether it be Norwood, Natick, or in the case of girls lacrosse, Framingham. Not until last year did the Rebels even have a tally in the win column against Framingham’s girls lacrosse team in the program’s history. Walpole’s historical victory in a tension-filled game — affected by severe weather conditions — made this year’s match up a much anticipated game on the schedule.
On Thursday, May 8, Walpole hosted the Flyers under the lights on Turco Field. Well-aware of the newly developed rivalry, both the Rebels and Framingham came into the game with just one goal in mind: a win. The Flyers began the first half with strong offense and defense, and also retained many possessions off of the draw circle — usually a strength for the Rebels. A great performance by Framingham’s goalie and dominant defense against Walpole’s 8-meter opportunities gave the Flyers a 6-4 lead at halftime.
Framingham was able to hold the lead for the rest of the game, but not with ease. Senior goalie Erin LeBlanc made multiple saves to keep the score within a reasonable margin. Walpole upheld tight defensive pressure for the entirety of the game, despite the Rebels’ lack of goals in the offensive end. Freshman Alison Foley came from behind the goal circle and netted a shot with only a few minutes remaining, but the goal did not count due a crease violation. The final score of 7-5 in favor of Framingham revealed the competitiveness within the game and the ongoing rivalry between the two teams.
Senior captain Michele Lucas said, “We didn’t play as well offensively as we did defensively, but losses happen. They were a good team, we just have to focus on the next opponent.”
Junior Molly Lanahan again led the Rebels with a total of four goals on the night, with Walpole’s only other goal coming from junior Olivia O’Brien.
Following the close loss, Walpole retaliated in a 19-10 victory over Braintree on May 13, giving the Rebels an overall record of 13-3. Walpole concludes their regular season schedule with upcoming games against Norwood on May 15, which is Senior Night, and at Natick on May 19. Looking into the post-season, the Rebels hope to make it deeper than most previous seasons. Their record will most likely slot them a home game in the opening round, and their relocation to Division 2 this year may give them more beatable opponents early in the playoffs.
