Looking to repeat their Cinderella tournament run of last year, the Herget Champions Walpole Girls Soccer, went into the post-season with very high hopes. After finishing their regular season with a record of 13-1-4, Girls Soccer clinched the #5 seed for the playoffs.
On November 5, 2014 Walpole beat Marshfield 2-0, and advanced on to face Whitman-Hanson on November 8, 2014. Walpole lost to Whitman-Hanson 4-2, ending their season with an overall record of 15-2-4.
“Going into the tournament we had some really high goals set for the team” said senior Captain Ashley Levya. “So losing during the second game was hard for us all especially the seniors. It was really sad and any one of us would give anything for just one more game.”
Although they failed their season goal of making it to the State Championship, Walpole did succeed in improving their record, from last year’s 6-6-6 to this year’s 13-1-4. This improved record allowed Walpole to jump drastically from the #19 seed last year to the #5 seed this year.
Also, the team earned the title of Herget Champions for the first time since 2006. They were also the first team in the Herget to qualify for the post-season tournament.
“Clenching the Herget title was a great feeling,” said senior Captain Annie Gallivan. “Going into this season, the team definitely had the potential to go far, so winning the title just validated our potential, and also made us hungry for a State Champion title.”
Even though their post-season ended earlier than they wished, Walpole’s success throughout their regular season will leave all eyes on them when the Fall 2015 season rolls around.
