Walpole Varsity Wrestling faced Milton opponent of the season on December 22. Going in with a record of 3-1-0, Walpole defeated Milton with a blowout meet 58-6 to move to 4-1-0.
Despite the lopsided score, one match stood out because it went triple overtime.
First year varsity athlete, junior heavyweight Sean McCullough closed out the evening with a triple overtime victory over an archrival who he twice had lost to over the weekend at the Wayland Tournament.
“He lost to that same kid twice on Saturday and overcoming him in triple overtime is very impressive,” said senior captain and fourth year wrestler Matt Rando.
The first three wrestlers of the night, freshman Anthony Borelli, junior Tyler Splaine, and senior Mike Shea all came out victorious and contributed the first 18 points on Walpole’s score board.
After five consecutive pins Walpole pulled away from Milton with a score of 30-0. This dominance over their opponents continued for the entirety of the match.
The two assistant coaches for this season behind head Sean Petrosino are alumni varsity wrestlers, Kilroy and Ricky Paige. With the special experience of even wrestling alongside the boys, they have high aptitude to understand the athletes and guarantee achievement through coaching.
“There’s a lot of returning stars who had great years and there’s a lot of high hopes for this season, [it] should be a great year.” said assistant coach Kyle Kilroy.
The rest of the season looks hopeful as Walpole High School Wrestling continues on the mat with a record of 4-1-0.
Junior Paul Kauranen said, “I really think we’re gonna be something special this year.”
