Walpole High School Girls Basketball pulled off a 55- 41 win against Norwood High School on Feb. 16 on senior night. With the win, the team finished their regular season with a 12-8 record. On Thursday night, #11 seed Walpole will play their tournament game against #6 seed O’Bryant High School at 6:30 at John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics and Science, 55 Malcolm X. Boulevard, Roxbury, MA. 

The game got off to a slow start but in the fourth quarter the team was able to pull off a 22- 4 run against Norwood to ultimately help win the game.

Senior captain Kelly Fogarty said, “Although we wish we could have won by more, the 22- 4 run in the fourth was something that showed our pride and ability to take over a game. I’m really excited for the tournament and the impact and damage we could make!”

At the end of the third quarter, Norwood led 37-33. However, the team was able to take the lead with successful plays. Senior captain Kelly Fogarty drained a three pointer to put Walpole ahead 38-37 at the beginning of the fourth quarter.

“I thought we really struggled in the start, but in the fourth quarter something clicked as a team and we came back outscoring them 22- 4 winning the game,” said sophomore Nataliya Amaral.

Walpole held a 9-4 lead at the end of the first quarter, but gradually lost the lead in the second quarter.

At the end of the first half, Walpole was losing 21-20. Walpole was still down 37-33 at the end of the third quarter.

“We started off really slow and we were disappointed by that, but after the third quarter, we really came together as a team and forced many turnovers. I’m proud of our team for not giving up and letting Norwood stay in the game,” said Kelly Fogarty.

Freshman Sydney Scales helped cut Norwood’s lead throughout the game, and contributed 12 points to the team. Scales and senior Courtney Brigham tied for the leading scorers of the game.

Coach Wall said, ‘It didn’t start great, but it finished great. It is always tough against Norwood.”
