With the holiday season and the spirit of giving in mind, Seniors Jocelyn Lydon and Julia Kelsey from National Honors Society (NHS) have started a toy drive. This is the time of year when families who have financial hardships struggle the most. Lydon and Kelsey thought it would be a good idea to help out families who have children who will be spending the holidays in the hospital by having Walpole High School donate some toys.
Since the toys would be going to Children’s Hospital, the toys have to be completely sanitary. In other words, the toys have to be packaged and sealed so they will not be able to transmit diseases easily. Items such as books and boardgames are ideal. Stuffed animals should not be donated because they can carry germs.
Many people during this time of year are busy shopping for their friends and family and wondering what they are going to get as a present. However, the families who struggle the most are sometimes forgotten. With the help of students in the high school, hundreds of sick children will be able to receive gifts like everyone else does during the holidays.
Giving and getting presents is sometimes taken for granted. However, that is not necessarily a bad thing. If every WHS student adds a gift donation to his or her shopping list, the school can make a huge impact by spreading the spirit of the holiday season to hundreds of families in need.
The toy drive will run through December 20th. As long as the gift is packaged, it is going to a good cause. Kids from Children’s Hospital will receive the donations as a gift for the holidays. All donations are appreciated and will go to a great cause, so the toy drive should be kept in mind as the holidays approach.
