Snow was falling on the ground as parents, faculty, and friends strolled into Walpole High School for the annual Winter Concert. The music concert opened up with the Band playing three lengthy pieces full of dramatic crescendos and impressive features of each section. The first two pieces were upbeat with varying tempos whereas the second piece was more seasonal. The second act was the Jazz Choir – a select choir headed by Mrs. Lynda Maccini Pavloff. The Jazz Choir performed old favorites such as “The First Noel”, “O, Come All Ye Faithful” and, “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”. The Jazz Choir, per tradition, called up Alumnus from the audience to sing alongside the choir and Maccini joined the chorus for most songs. The Jazz Choir was then followed by the Jazz Band – another select group head by Dan Mackenzie. The Jazz Band played three tunes ranging from the romantic “When I Fall in Love” to the flavorful “Cubano Chant”. These pieces featured solos by senior Meredith Barry on the trombone, senior Ashley Quinones on the trumpet and junior Derek Caneja and junior John Griffin on the tenor sax.
The Chorus Group was first up after intermission and performed a collection of upbeat songs including “Fum, Fum, Fum” and “Pat-a-Pan”. A couple songs featured other instrumentalists from the Band such as senior Nicole Andre on flute, junior Jonathan Trudell on the hand-drum and senior Ali True on the clarinet. Ending the night’s performance was the Orchestra, who blew the audience with their three pieces: “Grand March from Tanhauser”, “In the Bleak Mid-Winter” “Into the Storm”. The night ended in a standing ovation and smiles plastering the faces of everyone in the audience. The Walpole High School music department – led by Mr. Michael Falker – did not disappoint in this well-attended Winter Concert and will surely be bringing as much, if not more, talent to the Spring Concert sometime in April.
