Walpole boys varsity soccer tied 1-1 against Sharon (8-8-5) on their senior night, Oct. 30. The Rebels secured their spot in tournament on Oct. 28 with a 5-1 win against Milton, and the tie on senior night allowed the team to end the regular season on a high note with their record set at 4-10-3.

“It was very relieving to make tournament. We had a tough regular season playing some good competition, but it was relieving to still get in, and we are all excited to play Nauset,” senior captain Danny Colbert said.

The Rebels started off the game strong defensively, keeping the score tied at zero through half time. Saves from goalies on both sides kept the game low scoring, but intense. With 25:21 left in the second half, Sharon was able to score their first and final goal of the game.

“With it being senior night, everyone was hyped up and ready to play. Sharon scoring the first goal discouraging, but we did not let it affect how we played, but used it to motivate ourselves to continue to try our hardest,” Colbert said. 

Despite Sharon leading 1-0, the Rebels did not let down and continued to push on both the offensive and defensive fronts. This high level of intensity ultimately led to a goal from senior captain Conor Brady with 10:49 remaining in the game.

“It felt great to score in that game because that goal ultimately tied the game and knocked Sharon out of tournament because they needed to win that game in order to get in,” Brady said. 

With their energy up from Brady’s goal, the Rebels were able to continue the fight and keep Sharon from scoring any more goals. The score remained 1-1 to close out the game and bring the Rebels regular season to a close. The team is now focused on the post-season tournament and hope to make it as far as possible. 

“Our first big challenge is the number one seed Nauset. We are looking for some revenge from last year after they knocked us out of tournament in the sectional finals. Our main focus is on Nauset and we are just trying to shock the state with a big win against a powerhouse opponent,” Brady said.

The Rebels lost their first tournament game to Nauset on Nov. 4 with a score of 4-0.
