10 Fashion Trends From the 90s That Are Coming Back
Jeans
Many people have moved on from the 2000s skinny jeans phase and are now choosing to wear looser, more comfortable jeans. Some examples include straight leg jeans, flare jeans, skater jeans and mom jeans. Two-tone jeans and acid-wash jeans are also coming back in style for a more vintage look.
Slip Dresses
Slip dresses quickly became more popular in 2020 and are most likely going to last throughout 2021. People tend to style them with layers; for example, wearing a tighter long sleeve turtleneck or short sleeve underneath. Slip dresses will probably be more popular in the spring and summer time with the warm weather.
Graphic Tees
More and more clothing companies have started to sell graphic tees as they are “trendy” right now. People tend to layer them with long sleeve shirts underneath or a cute jacket on top. Wearing graphic tees adds that vintage 90s look that many are going for nowadays.
Claw Clips
In addition to scrunchies, claws clips are another hair accessory coming back from the 90s. This trend has spread quickly through social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, and more girls have been wearing them as an accessory to their outfits. Claw clips are perfect for both cute or comfy outfits. Many people have been styling the pastel-colored claw clips that go with that trendy 90s look.
Platform Shoes
YouTuber and social media influencer Emma Chamberlain can take partial credit for this trend as she has been wearing platform shoes for years now. From platform Converse to platform Doc Martens, people all across the world have been sporting platform shoes. Many use them to look taller or just to add a more stylish look to their outfits.
Bomber/Puffer Jackets
Puffer jackets and bomber jackets first became popular in the 90s because of their versatility with any outfit. Companies like Tommy Hilfiger and Champion were most notable for making puffer jackets in the 90s, but recently all sorts of companies have been making them. Both can be worn all year round and in both men’s and women’s fashion.
Corduroy
Another trend from the 90s is corduroy, which recently gained fame this fall and lasted throughout the winter. There’s no doubt about it that this trend will continue into 2021 and potentially even next fall. Popular clothing brands, like American Eagle, have been releasing corduroy lines this year with corduroy pants, jackets, skirts, dresses, shorts, overalls and even hats.
Mesh
Mesh shirts and dresses are back in style as celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kylie Jenner and Cardi B have been seen sporting the trend. Mesh comes in an out of style every few years, but it is back in 2021 with a twist. Some are wearing the traditional plain colored mesh tops while others are wearing more bright patterned mesh tops to spice up their outfit.
Sweater Vests
Sweater vests are now trending again, similar to the way they were in the 90s. Some are going for the oversized sweater vest look with a tennis skirt, and others are going for the tighter sweater vest look with jeans. Most people are layering sweater vests with long sleeve turtlenecks, collared shirts or short sleeve t-shirts.
Oversized Clothing
Oversized clothing has been in style for a few years, starting with oversized t-shirts in the “VSCO girl” era. Now more clothing companies like Brandy Melville, American Eagle, Urban Outfitters, etc. are coming out with more oversized items. Most people are wearing oversized sweaters, hoodies, zip-ups, and t-shirts, similar to 90s fashion.
