How To Make Homemade Irish Bread
Irish bread is one among many of the St. Patrick’s Day cooking traditions that can be found on the table alongside corned beef and cabbage on March 17. Most breads require yeast in order for the bread to rise; however, Irish bread does not need yeast, making it easy to bake. To start baking this delicious bread, preheat the oven to 400 degrees and grease a round aluminum pan.
In one large bowl start by mixing 2 cups of flour, 1 teaspoon of cream of tartar, 1 teaspoon of baking soda and 1 teaspoon of salt.
Then, add ¼ cup of sugar and 1 ¼ cup of raisins.
Once mixed together, add 1 beaten egg plus 1 cup of sour cream.
Finally, add ¼ cup or half of a stick of melted butter.
After the Irish bread batter is fully mixed together, slowly pour into one round aluminum pan making sure the batter is evenly spread around the pan. Before putting it into the oven to bake, sprinkle sugar on top of the batter for a finished product with an outer sugary layer. Bake for 35 minutes, or until the bread is fully cooked through. One way to test this is by putting a knife in the bread. If the knife comes out clean, it is ready, if not, the bread needs more time in the oven.
As soon as the bread is done baking, let the bread cool on a separate plate. Subsequently, cut the bread making each serving 2 inches thick. Relax and enjoy with butter.
