Meet the Captains: Field Hockey
Caroline Whelan
When did you start playing the sport?
I started playing in 3rd grade.
Do you want to continue this sport in college?
I would love to, but I am already playing another sport in college.
Who was a prominent coach in your career? Why?
My dad has always been a prominent coach in my career because he has taught me life-long lessons that go beyond the field. No matter what sport or club I played for, he would always show up and support me. Coach Tosone has also been a prominent coach in my career because ever since I was little he has been a coach of mine and has pushed me to become the best player I can be.
What other activities/sports are you involved in?
I also play lacrosse.
How do you feel going into this season?
I am really excited for this season, especially since there will be playoffs, unlike last year. As cliche as it sounds, I think we are all really close this year and have great team chemistry, which translates onto the field. We have a lot of new starters this year but they have all really stepped up into a major role and do not seem like underclassmen when playing.
What are some goals set for the team this coming season? How do you plan to achieve them?
One of the biggest goals I think we all have is winning a state championship. Part of winning a state championship is being able to create a fun and comfortable environment for everyone on the team during practice/games, so we can all work together in achieving the ultimate goal. Lastly, we need to show up with intensity to every single practice and treat it like it is a game in order to be successful and win.
Who are some big opponents/rivals? Why?
Two of our biggest opponents this year will be Wellesley and Westwood. Although we have not played Westwood before, they are a very similar team to us and have a lot of skilled players. In addition, Wellesley has always given us trouble whenever we play and the games are usually close. It is always fun playing a competitive and skilled team like them.

When did you start playing the sport?
I started playing in 3rd grade.
Do you want to continue this sport in college?
No.
Who was a prominent coach in your career? Why?
My dad has been a prominent coach for me ever since I was very little. He has put so much of his time into making me the athlete I am today. He taught me how to play and love the game and he has pushed me to do better in every aspect of the sport.
What other activities/sports are you involved in?
I also play lacrosse and ice hockey.
How do you feel going into this season?
I feel confident in the talent our team brings this year. Every year we are able to pick up where we last left off, even with outstanding players leaving us, because the program is really strong and brings so many athletes. We have very good returning players and we have some new girls that will definitely be able to contribute to the team this season.
What are some goals set for the team this coming season? How do you plan to achieve them?
One goal is definitely to achieve an undefeated record and get as far as we can in the state tournament. In order to achieve this, our team needs to work really hard in practice so that it shows in the games. I think we are definitely capable of this because of the talent and dedication we have.
Who are some big opponents/rivals? Why?
Wellesley and Needham are our biggest opponents because they always give us good competition and every year it is a tough and physical match.
Natalie Griffin

Who was a prominent coach in your career? Why?
Jen Quinn because she was the one that changed my position from offense to defense, which has given me so many opportunities.
What other activities/sports are you involved in?
I also play basketball and lacrosse.
How do you feel going into this season?
I am very excited to start. I think this season will be fun.
What are some goals set for the team this coming season? How do you plan to achieve them?
We plan to hopefully win a state title. That is always the goal, but another goal is to show up and play the best we can against the strong teams we are challenged by every season.
Who are some big opponents/rivals? Why?
Somerset-Berkeley is always a big competitor because we have only beat them a couple of games out of many in recent years. Natick and Wellesley are also both teams that give us good competition every year and the score is always super close with those teams.
