Best of 2008
by Olivia Caron
With the year coming to a close, it is nice to reflect on the best aspects of the year… from movies and websites to books and music, here is a list of some of the best things of 2008.
BEST WEBSITE
GAS BUDDY
As the economy deteriorates more and more, frugal people are inquiring where they can fine the cheapest gas. GasBuddy lets consumers know, because the site collects prices from some 750,000 volunteer price “spotters,” who send in daily updates from their local stations to your cell phone. With prices varying by up to 50 cents from one station to the next in some cities, it pays to stay informed. A heat map displays where prices are currently the highest and lowest. and also shows you how prices have changed over time .
BEST MOVIE
BATMAN: THE DARK NIGHT
After grossing more than 203.8 million, “The Dark Night” has been one of the biggest super-hero movies ever to be released. With sensational acting by Heath Ledger, Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart, and Gary Oldman, the film appeals to all age groups and all sect of society: Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker is one of the most memorable villains ever to grace the screen. The effects are top-notch, Nolan’s direction is crisp and precise, and the movie leaves you feeling blown away. The Dark Knight is just about as good as movies get.
BEST ALBUM
“VIVA LA VIDA OR DEATH AND ALL HIS FRIENDS”
Being hailed as the second U2 is about as big of a compliment as you can get in the music industry: Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” has launched the band into global stardom in 2008. After gaining platinum ranking after just three days, the band has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide. 2009 holds only promises for Coldplay.
BEST SONG
“IM YOURS”
With so many popular songs this year, I definitely had a hard time deciding what song should get my number one vote. The top songs I was choosing from came from all angles, from Rihanna’s “Disturbia,” to Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida” to Lil’ Wayne’s “Lollipop,” I finally decided on Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours.” The simple yet calming melody, similar to the style of Bob Marley, made “Im Yours” a mega-hit this summer.
