Massachusetts has become the eighth U.S. state to offer free school meals to all public school students statewide, starting this academic year. This follows three years of COVID-19 funding that provided free school lunches. In August, Governor Mara Healy made this program permanent.
Massachusetts voters approved a 4% “millionaire tax” increase in 2022, effective in 2023. The revenue supports the Massachusetts Department of Secondary Education (DESE) and Department of Transportation (DOT). DESE primarily funds the new universal free meal program. Previously, families with an anual income under $52,000 for a family of four were eligible for free or reduced-priced lunch, requiring an application. This could exclude struggling families.
Providing free school lunches in Massachusetts not only aids those in need but also fosters more inclusive communities. This approach eliminates the stigma associated with meal assistance and ensures all students regardless of financial situations, can thrive and contribute to their community. Families who might fall under the qualification of the free or reduced meal program are encouraged to submit an application as eligible families can receive various fee waivers such as bus fee wavers, SAT fees and college application fees. Completing the free/reduced application also helps secure funding to maintain the nutrition program.
Massachusetts’ decision to offer free school statewide is a step toward achieving equality and education. With state and federal funding along with the “millionaire tax” initiative, Massachusetts is paving the way for public school students to focus on their studies without the burden of hunger or economic disparity. This approach reflects Massachusetts’ commitment to the well-being of its students ensuring that no child goes hungry and that every student has the opportunity to succeed.
The Walpole School Nutrition Program encourages families who need additional assistance to apply for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the federal nutrition program providing eligible families with grocery benefits.
