During the winter months, poverty and struggles with food are constantly increasing due to cold weather and sickness around the community. This affects many, especially those struggling with affording food prices. To help out, Walpole High School’s Community Service Club returned with their annual food drive to Walpole High School. They partnered with the Walpole Food Pantry for this drive, and with all donations additionally to be transferred to the Walpole Food Pantry.
The Walpole Community Service Club is run by Ms. Fallon, a science teacher at Walpole High School. This club hosts many volunteering opportunities, and helps greatly within our community, especially this food drive in particular.
“The purpose of the food drive is to help the members of our community during the holiday,” said Ms. Fallon.
For food items, they accepted canned goods, pasta and rice. Sanitary items were also accepted for donations including wipes, hand sanitizer and paper towels. The food drive particularly added name brand soups to their list of accepted products as well. They also accepted tissues, paper plates and plastic utensils. Collecting for the Food Pantry ran until November 17th, then club members planned to transport the items to the Walpole Food Pantry. The Walpole Food Pantry does pickups at Walpole High weekly, as the food donated is distributed equally to those in need every Wednesday from 2:30 – 4pm for anyone within the Walpole community.
“In past years, paper products have been one of their most needed items.” said Ms. Fallon. “In past years, [the club] was able to fill one of [their] boxes with various donations.”
At the following meeting, the club spent time making posters to advertise the food drive. These colorful posters were found all around Walpole High School. The Community Service Club has had a variety of fundraisers in the past, but they are hoping for even more success this year!
