Halloween, arguably, has some of the best movies out of any holiday. From horror films to family friendly classics, each one ties together elements of suspense, nostalgia and festivity. As Halloween approaches quickly, popular movies are beginning to resurface.
Based on the iconic Disney World ride, the 1997 classic “Tower of Terror,” is about an abandoned hotel that caused the disappearance of five people decades before in 1939. The reason for their disappearances is supposedly due to an elevator malfunction. Throughout the movie a newspaper editor and his niece investigate the killing to solve the mystery. The editing effects and chilling music used in this movie give viewers a thrilling watching experience.
“Hocus Pocus,” made in 1993 is classified as a family comedy movie. The movie is set in Salem, Mass. where Max and Dani Dennison accidently free three evil witches; Winidred, Mary and Sarah Sanderson. The kids have to work together to steal the witch’s book of spells to stop their surplus of power. Overall, this movie draws away from the horror of Halloween movies and is more so a funny movie that focuses heavily on the ditzy personalities of the witches.
“The Nightmare Before Christmas” is an animated musical that was also made in 1993. The story involves the main character, Jack, who is bored of the Halloween season. When he stumbles upon Christmas Town, he tries to implement parts of it into Halloween Town. His reindeer are skeletons and ghosts and he dresses up in a Santa Claus costume. The movie is a light-hearted Halloween movie that is easy for viewers to follow along and understand.
The movie “Coraline” was released in 2009 as a stop-motion animated family horror movie. The main character, Coraline, finds another world behind a door in her new home. In this world lives an alternate, peculiar, version of her parents. They have button eyes and give her more attention than her parents in the real world do, luring her to stay in this world. Once her parallel family attempts to keep her there forever, she is forced to use her bravery to escape. Many dark twists throughout the movie make it an exciting watch.
“The Addams Family,” released in 1991, is a classic and timeless Halloween film that is recognized by all. In the movie, the Addams family reconnects with a man who claims to be their long lost relative Fester. The family learns throughout the movie that he is not able to remember past memories with the family. In the end, the family discovers the disguise was in an attempt to steal the Addams family fortune. Many recognize the classic movie because of one of the family members, Wednesday Addams; whose well-known costume is worn often on Halloween.
