The WHS Art Club is a place where students of varying artistic abilities can meet to work on their own individual projects or have a more structured craft or project. The club is run by the art teacher TJ Bergeron, who took over the club and has worked to make it a safe creative space for students to participate in both their own expressive projects and organized group activities with their peers.
After having a scheduled day, many students appreciate a place where they can create and express themselves outside of the school curriculum.
“Art Club is a spot to let your creativity go a little more free,” Bergeron said. “[It’s] open to what the members want to bring each week.”
Students primarily choose which projects they want to create and some of the past projects include painting the lockers in the English wing to replicate their favorite books, making a cardboard cutout that people can put their faces in for a Walpole fair and creating their own shrinky dinks.
All students are welcome to the club and weekly attendance is not mandatory, students are encouraged to attend whenever they are able.
“If you can come once a month that’s great; if you can come once a week, that’s great; if you just want to try it out, that’s lovely,” Bergeron said.
Students are not expected to have any prior artistic experience. Even those who have no art classes in their schedule enjoy having a space where they can let their creativity flow.
“I hope students who go to Art Club can feel more comfortable with themselves and bring that outside of the club,” Bergeron said.
The club meets each Thursday in room 1141, and the meetings last an hour. Anyone who is interested in the club can feel free to stop by and go to a meeting or can contact Bergeron for further questions.
