This fall, the WHS Bible Club kicked off its second year as a club. President Issac Mills and Vice-President Joseph Horgan are the new student officers for the club, working alongside club advisor Peter Salmans. Moving into its second year, the club continues its goal to be an inclusive space for anybody to attend and grow in their faith.
“Everyone is welcome, no matter your religious background. We’ve had multiple people who aren’t religious attend meetings because they wanted to learn about Christianity, and it is a welcoming place for all students at WHS,” Horgan said.
On Mondays, the club meets to participate in devotions, engage in guided discussions about theology and even to enjoy snacks. This year, the club aims to spend time reading the book of Philippians.
“Typically, one of the club officers will facilitate a discussion where the club reads the chapter together. After we finish reading, we take a few minutes and write down some notes and interpretations of the verses,” Horgan said. “We then discuss the passage with each other, by answering each other’s questions, sharing interesting thoughts, and drawing similarities from the passage to our current lives.”
However, the group participates in more than discussions and has other activities planned for club members throughout the year.
“We are planning on having guest speakers who will share their testimonies, days where we will watch a movie and a worship night,” Horgan said.
The group concluded their first meeting on Monday, Sept. 9 and will typically continue to meet in Salmans’ room, 2129 in the English wing, every Monday throughout the school year. If anybody is interested in joining the club, they can contact Salmans, Mills, or Horgan with questions.
“We are all very welcoming and appreciative of everyone who is interested in the club,” Horgan said. “Everyone always has a smile on their face at the club, and everyone is super friendly and caring.”
