Walpole High School is dealing its students a new extracurricular activity with the launch of the Cards Club. Math teacher Dave St. Martin, Mikey St. Martin, Zander Winter and Sean Hazel have spearheaded the club’s creation.
“It started last year when Mikey and his friends wanted to learn more card games and play against each other,” St. Martin said. “We tried to get it started but it was the end of the school year, so we figured we would try it this year.”
Dave envisions meetings occurring monthly with participants exploring new games, discussing strategies and enjoying friendly competition. Players will dive into a variety of card games, including the classics.
“I would like them to play games like Spades, Hearts, poker [as well as] any card game they want to play,” St. Martin said.
The club is advertised for students of all levels and experience. During the games, members will practice using strategies to help in competitive games; however, St. Martin emphasizes the objective will remain friendly and for fun, without any wagers.
“I would hope we have some advanced players and some beginners,” St. Martin said.
The club’s student leadership also includes Winter and Hazel who were key parts to the creation of the Card’s club. St. Martin is optimistic about the boys’ enthusiasm and hard work getting the club running this year
“It was their idea, and they are hoping to get it going this year,” St. Martin said.
The first meeting will be held after school on Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Room 2316 for any students interested to learn a new game or master their skills. The meeting will lay the groundwork for future meetings as well as an opportunity for members to discuss goals for the 2024-2025 school year.
With plans to meet once a month, the Cards Club has potential to gain some traction and attention from students at Walpole High School.
