The WHS Creative Writing Club is an exciting way to express yourself through writing. The club was previously advised by William Moody, who is no longer working at WHS. This year, English teacher, Lisa Linden took over Moody’s role.
“The club is so different from academic writing but I think it will correlate. Our club focuses less on structure, but written expression that I think would carry over,” Linden said.
The club helps students focus on the creativity aspect of writing and helps them express their imagination on paper. Linden comes up with writing prompt ideas that the students can respond to. The students have two weeks to work on their prompt during club meetings or in their free time. The class then meets to workshop eachothers writing and give eachother positive feedback.
“I think it will be interesting to see what the students will come up with in their writing. I don’t want to dictate what could happen. I want to see the students take leadership,” Linden said. “I chose prompts that I liked and thought students could connect to. I also have ideas for future prompts of things I liked in highschool, so I hope they will like it too. I had a student ask me if they had to write about the prompt, and the answer is no. If they have something they want to write about, they should write about it, it’s their club after all,” Linden said.
Linden expresses that the students enjoy this club because they have the freedom to write about whatever comes to their mind. She hopes the club can continue to grow and gain even more members. Her students enjoy the club and she plans to advise other people to help them feel comfortable in her classroom and help them enjoy writing, as she does herself. You can find more details about this club on their instagram account, @whs.creativewritingclub, that shares dates of meetings for the club.
“I would like the club to be a safe place where people feel comfortable expressing themselves in writing, and feeling like this is a good place to share it,” Linden said.
