9 years ago, Joe Braccini formed the WHS Photography Club to give students an opportunity to practice photography skills and share photos with the community. A year after he founded the club, he passed on the adviser position to Joanne D’Agostino, who has run the club ever since.
“The photography club is for the casual and seasoned photographer,” D’Agostino said.“If you enjoy taking pictures whether it be with your phone or a really amazing camera then you will enjoy the club.”
The meetings are supposed to be very welcoming for all students. At a meeting, they show each other their pictures from the previous week, and choose a new theme for the week. Students like to base the themes off of the time of year, and to appeal to students’ interests.
“ A normal club meeting is basically a fun environment with some snacks that I bring each week, then we share the photos from the week’s theme on the screen to see how everyone interpreted the theme of the week. We enjoy seeing everyone’s pictures. Then we choose a new theme for the next week. We try to stick to either the time of year or a season or maybe a holiday without it being the actual holiday such as Christmas we would do lights which can also be for Chanukka as well so that other holidays get represented.” D’Agostino said.
The club does an annual photography contest in December where interested students can submit photos based on a particular theme. This contest allows students outside of the club to still participate in some of the club’s offerings. Ms. D’Agostino said, “We do a Photography Contest usually right before the Winter Break. The students pick a theme and we advertise it on Timber TV for a few weeks. I have the students who participate send the photos to Paula Fontaine.”
In addition to taking photos around town, the club also hosts a yearly outing where members travel into Boston and take photos in the city. D’Agostino hopes that the trip offers students the opportunity to shoot photos in a location outside of their comfort zone to help them improve their skills.
“We try to go on a field trip to Boston once a year and take pictures outside in Boston for a change of pace and for something fun,” D’Agostino said.
The group meets every Thursday right after school in room 2302. If you are interested, you can contact D’Agostino or senior Eve Brousaides.
