At Walpole High School, the Spanish Club gives students the opportunity to expose themselves to Spanish culture. Club adviser Richard Sturges aims to foster immersion between the club’s members and culture from Spanish-speaking countries around the world through various activities, while strengthening relationships and friendships among members.
“We have a variety of experiences that appeal to all different interests. There’s something for everyone,” Sturges said. “I think the social aspect is the best part of the club. Many people make new friends by joining the Spanish Club and taking part.”
During meetings, members participate in various activities, from Spanish trivia and Scrabble, to Spanish karaoke and movie-watching. Plus, the club even goes on field trips to cultural events in Boston, and this year, to a Spanish-influenced restaurant.
“We go to Boston once or twice a year for cultural events. This year, we are heading to the MFA in October to see a Salvador Dali exhibit, and later this year, we will visit a restaurant in Boston,” Sturges said. “Our trips into Boston are fun nights out and many people go.”
Although the Spanish club mainly entices WHS students who study Spanish, students from all backgrounds and interests are welcome to join the club. However, those who do take Spanish at WHS and participate in the Spanish Club are able to strengthen their connection to Spanish culture, thus improving their performance in class.
“Most of our club members take Spanish, but we occasionally get people who don’t. I’ll assist them with the language parts of the club, and other club members do as well. They typically are able to adjust just fine,” Sturges said. “I think our club’s experiences give an outlet for people who are interested in Spanish language and culture, which in turn leads to more motivation in class.”
Students who are interested in joining the Spanish Club can visit room 1332 and speak to Sturges, who will invite interested students to the club’s Google Classroom page. Additionally, students can follow the club’s Instagram account, @walpole.spanish.club, for reminders about events and upcoming meetings.
