The Walpole High School Speech and Debate Club. This club’s adviser Emily Murray runs the club. This club serves to improve many students’ ‘public speaking abilities, to foster their independence and to teach them lessons about communication.
“I was an alumni of Natick High School and did their speech program all four years,” Murray said. “And it was the best thing I did because it made me a more confident person, helped me speak publicly but also I made a lot of great friends.”
Murray started this club to give other kids the opportunities she had in high school. There are many things someone can do once joining the club, there are many events that take place at sPEtournaments. There are speeches, debates, acting, group events and so much more. Another great thing is getting to travel to different places.
Murray informs us “We get to attend tournaments all over the country which is something that is really amazing about speech and debate and there are lots of travel opportunities”
There is something for every student. Whether it’s debates, speeches or something else. Doing Speech and Debate can do wonders for you and your confidence. Many actors and politicians did Speech and Debate as highschoolers.
“If you want to do a career where you have to be in the limelight or you have to speak publicly, this is the club for you,” Murray said.
This club meets on Mondays for both Speech and Debate students in room 2124. Additionally, Debate students also meet on Wednesdays in room 2124 from 5 to 6 p.m. Interested students can email Mrs. Murray or attend a Monday meeting.
