Walpole High School offers many different athletic programs that are great opportunities for socialization and exercise. If you have wondered about participating in one of Walpole’s many different programs and benefits to them. Joining a winter sport can lead to many great opportunities for all students to help with socialization, curing the winter depression and an increase in exercise.
WHS offers a variety of sports for both boys and girls. The sports you can choose from are basketball, hockey, indoor track, wrestling and gymnastics. All of these options, except for gymnastics, accept both girls and boys. Joining one of these sports will lead you to many opportunities to make new friends, compete against other towns and find a passion for athletics, especially in the depressing cold weather!
Joining a sport during the winter can keep you active during the cold months. While winter can often leave you feeling sluggish and unmotivated, winter sports are a great way to stay engaged. Not only do they benefit your physical health, but they offer opportunities to socialize, making the long, cold months more enjoyable. The winter season lasts around three months, keeping athletes occupied everyday after school. Winter sports begin the Monday after Thanksgiving and the regular season wraps up before students leave for February break.
“Although the season is a short one, it is an action packed bonding experience with memories that can last you a lifetime,” anonymous WHS Freshman said.
Athletes in winter sports have only had positive things to say about their experience.
“Hockey has a positive effect on me by meeting new people, and learning to communicate better,” WHS Sophomore Caroline Sullivan said.
Even in the depressing cold weather, athletes get the chance to brighten up their moods by participating in a sport. Even attending the games is an excellent way to participate in the school spirit. Many students enjoy spectating games like hockey and basketball! Students select a theme for every game and wear something matching the theme! Some popular themes can be USA, jerseys, blackout, and many more!
“My favorite games to go to are the basketball games because of the atmosphere and the spirit that the students bring,” WHS Freshman Maura Patey said.
Joining a sport can be a rewarding experience, offering both physical and social benefits. Staying active and engaged will not only enhance your well being but also create lasting memories and friendships.
