For the winter track season of 2025, the Walpole boys track team has once again gone undefeated in the Herget Division. With wins over Needham, Braintree, Weymouth and Milton, the team has gone undefeated in their division. The boys have gone to a total of five dual meets this season, along with five invitational meets so far. The regular season will come to an end on Jan. 28, with the final meet being an open meet at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. The postseason meets will continue, with the next meet being the Massachusetts State Track Association (MSTCA) Qualifier Meet, taking place on Feb. 8.
Throughout the season, the boys have reached a new heightened level of success, with multiple PRs and new school records set. Highlighting some of the lead point scorers, athletes Senior Owen Abril and Junior Brady Thomas continue to lead their team to victory with their successes in their events. Abril earned the team five points with his first place in the 55 meter hurdles. Abril also placed third overall in the 55 meter dash. Thomas earned the team a total of five points with a first place finish in the 300 meters.
“We were the underdogs and predicted to lose every single meet on paper, but meets aren’t won on paper, they’re won on the track,” Thomas said.
One of the events that earned the team lots of points at the block five meet was the 4×200 meters, which is a relay that was run by Senior Scott Falvey, Junior Arnold Obour-Menseh and Senior Matthew Nealon. This relay beat out all fellow competitors at almost every dual meet.
At the final dual meet, the boys won over Milton with a final score of 62-38.
Gaining significant points over Milton was the long jump, where Walpole swept the competition in the event. First place went to Abril, second to Obour-Menseh and third to Thomas. This helped them take home a total of 9 points from this event only. The third and second places matter just as much as first place. They eventually add up earning the team points.
“The meets were really won from those third places that helped keep us in the lead.” Thomas said.
For long distance events, Senior captain Cole Bowden earned first in the mile with an impressive 4:46. In the 1000meter, Junior Luke Zahurak scored first place with a 2:39. Sophomore Nathan O’Neill got a 10:29 in the two mile, getting first place over Milton.
The Walpole boys track team has had an incredible run this season, gaining the Herget Championship for the third year in a row. The final block five meet was just the end of an amazing season for these athletes, but you can expect the spring season to be just as great.
