The Philadelphia Eagles finally redeemed themselves after their Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs just two years ago. This year’s NFL championship was hosted at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for the 11th time, but this year was the first time in 12 years. The Chiefs entered the game as the favored team finishing first in the AFC west with a 15-2 record. Not only was their record impressive, but they also won all eight of their home games throughout the season. For the Eagles, they finished first in the NFC east with a 14-3 record winning eight of nine of their home games. Despite the Chiefs having a slightly better finishing record, the Super Bowl resulted in Eagles domination from start to finish with a final score of 40-22.
Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts started the game off strong scoring the first touchdown of the night in the first quarter. Hurts scored on a one yard run at 6:15 followed by a successful extra point kick by Jake Elliott. Hurts has been with the Eagles since he was drafted back in 2020 after playing for both the University of Alabama and the University of Oklahoma. Through the 2024-2025 season, Hurts has shown his leadership skills and his ability to set up a successful offense for the Eagles.
Continuing to build their lead, Elliot successfully kicked a 48 yard field goal at 8:48 in the second quarter for Philadelphia. Kansas City’s top quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, had a rough championship game throwing a total of two interceptions. Eagles Cornerback Cooper Dejean successfully caught the pass from Mahomes for a 38 yard interception return at 7:03. Elliott successfully kicked the extra point, making the score 17-0 in favor of the Eagles. The final touchdown of the quarter was scored at 1:35 by A.J. Brown who scored off of a 12 yard pass from Hurts, and scored the extra point off of Elliot’s kick.
Once again, Elliott opened up the second half strongly for Philadelphia with a 29 yard field goal at 5:18. At 2:40, Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith scored his first touchdown of the night off a 46 yard pass from Hurts which was followed by another successful Elliot kick. The Chiefs finally managed to get themselves on the scoreboard with only 34 seconds left in the third quarter after wide receiver Xavier Worthy scored a touchdown off of a 24 yard pass from Mahomes. Instead of trying to kick the extra point, the Chiefs failed their attempt at a two point conversion, putting Kansas City even further behind.
The final quarter opened with a 48 yard and a 50 yard field goal from Elliot. Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins scored his first touchdown of the game, and only the team’s second of the night at 2:54 off of a seven yard pass from Mahomes. For the second time, the Chiefs attempted a two point conversion which was successful off a pass from Mahomes to wide receiver Justin Watson. In the final two minutes of the game Worthy scored his second touchdown of the night off a 50 yard pass from Mahomes. To decrease the point differential, the Chiefs used this last opportunity to score off a two point conversion to get Hopkins into the end zone off a pass from Mahomes. Although the Chiefs made a great effort to come back, it was not enough to overcome the strong start the Eagles had in the first half of the game.
After Philadelphia’s command throughout the entire game, Hurts threw two touchdown passes, scored one touchdown and had 221 passing yards making his victory no surprise. The next NFL draft is planned for the end of April, with the regular season scheduled to begin in the first week of September. Next season’s games can be viewed on platforms such as NFL+, ESPN and Hulu+.
