The girls cross country rebound at home by beating Braintree and losing against Weymouth. The girls on varsity and junior varsity stepped up. This meet was the last meet for the senior girls to run at home. Coach Jamie Farrell said “In the time that the seniors have run cross country they have improved tremendously through hard work and effort”. Seniors captains Joanna Garry, Lindsey Wassel, and Paola Yerxa ran cross country all four years, as freshmen the coaches never thought they would be were they are now. Since then, the three girls have improved and no longer run the times they ran freshmen year. In this race Garry finished off her year strong with a 2 second PR with a time of 18:49.
In the JV race sophomore Casey Ganshirt stepped up to finish as the first female runner at 13:06, setting the stepping stones for the rest of the girls. Walpole had 7 girls finish before the first Weymouth girl finished. The top 7 girls were all within 30 seconds of one another. Junior Maddy Shea had her first race of the season coming off an injury and was able to finish as the second girl with a time of 13:06. Sophomore Catherine Murphy ran a big PR of 38 seconds with a time of 13:20 finishing in third place with junior Danielle Levya following right behind in fourth place finishing at 13:26, a 19 second PR for her. Junior Mary Reedy also ran a big 3:30 PR with a time of 13:32.
The girls followed JVs foot steps by putting in 4 girls before Braintree number one runner.
At the beginning of the varsity race sopomores Kristen Coyne and Mackenzie Wilson and freshmen Emma Campbell were pack running leading the runners into the woods. Coyne and Wilson were still pack running at the mile mark with sophomore Rachael Barry right behind them. With about two-thirds left of the race Wilson and Coyne was right behind Weymouth with Barry 10 seconds behind leading Campbell to the finish line. With 100 meters left, Wilson raced to the finish line, finished in third place but first for the Rebels. Barry had a great finish, sprinting the last 100 meters against two Weymouth girls, finishing between the two in 5th place over all but second for the girls with a time of 18:00. Coyne and Campbell finished strong sticking together with a time of 18:04 in 7th overall but third for the Walpole.
The girls look forward to continuing PRing in this weekends twilight invitational in Barnstable. The girls are hoping to come home with at least 5 medals.
