Fun. recently released their second album “Some Nights” on February 21— the follow up to their first Album “Aim & Ignite”. This fairly new group has risen to success with their latest album and single. The recently released single “We Are Young” has become extremely popular with people that are fans of all types of music. Although most of their fans still love their second album, others are critical. However, being a fairly new listener to their music I enjoyed most of the album, but can see where older fans would be disappointed.
Fun. is described as indie pop, but “Some Nights” slightly strays from their usual style. Their new heavier use of auto tune disappointed some fans who liked their old sound better. In the song “Some Nights” they sound like the indie pop band they are categorized as. Although there is a brief moment where there is an overload of auto tune. Fun. has gone more mainstream than they were before, making them more well known. However, some of their older fans liked when they were more obscure and original rather than the typical pop/ rock band.
The band’s newer fans do not question their new sound, they highly enjoy it. Not knowing the band’s old sound, they are not disappointed by their latest album. The recent fans enjoy the album because it has a pop side to it. The factor that made Fun. lose some of their old fans may have been the same thing that brought them so many new ones as well. Some may argue that the band used auto tune wisely in this album, but others say that it was cheap and just for sales. Lead singer, Nate Ruess has an impeccable voice, and the use of auto tune is not needed to improve his singing. Whether this is Fun’s true sound, or if they are just adapting to what is popular is unknown, but the album “Some Nights” has brought them a lot of success.
On the other hand, some old fans are happy with the new album’s sound. They enjoy the indie sound mixed with the pop sound. However, they are also not happy with the overuse of auto tune. Many previous fans do not mind some auto tune, but there is a limit. A song can go from innovative to annoying when too much is used. They still have a lot of different sounds in their album just as they always have. Sadly the addition of auto tune makes all of those original sounds get lost in the noise.
Although some of the band’s old fans do not like Fun’s latest album, it did hit number two on iTunes which is a great accomplishment for the band. Going mainstream may not have impressed their original fans, but it sure has helped their career. This new added pop sound that alters their original indie style may be just what Fun. needed to get people’s attention.

Nate doesn’t need autotune…his voice is so beautiful! I do think that they could have done a great job without the autotune…but to each his own i guess. I liked their first album much better I have to say.

I love the auto tune but they overused it a little bit.
