Most people are quite familiar with the characteristics of a typical Nicholas Sparks movie. There is always a cute romance and a tragic death. Many would argue that these elements of the story are what make his novels and movies so addicting. One may either come into the theater wondering if they are about to watch yet another corny chick flick, or they might go in thinking it will surpass The Notebook— a romantic movie of two star crossed lovers. Either way, his films and novels always attract large audiences and readers. The Lucky One hit theaters on April 20, 2012, and it truly did not disappoint. However, it was not better than The Notebook, but it certainly beat his worst movie yet, Dear John.
Zac Efron stars as Logan Thibeault, a U.S. soldier who finds a picture of a girl just as a bomb explodes near him. Although many in his batallion were unlucky and died around him, he did not. He feels this luck was given to him by the mysterious girl in the picture, Beth (Taylor Schilling). He arrives home to Colorado and finds himself searching for this woman on the computer in hopes of finding her to thank her for saving his life. Fortunately, Beth owns a local family-run kennel, and Logan ends up applying for a job. Beth’s ex-husband, Keith Clayton, acts as a threat to Logan in the movie after assuming that a relationship was going to build up between them. As it turns out, Keith was right— and so were most of the viewers who guessed that this love triangle would form. The story line that focused on the relationship between Logan and Beth is predictable, but it proved to be perfection.
Everything in this movie is skillfully tied together. It has the criteria for a 5-star silver screen movie: animals, an innocent child, a villain, a loving couple, and an amazing country setting. Zac Efron’s acting was definitely better than his role in High School Musical, while Taylor Schilling needs a little more practice.
The Lucky One is a film created for fans who love romance. It is not an Oscar-worthy movie, but simply a cute chick flick to watch in one’s spare time.

The Lucky One, I think, is quite powerful. And Zac really did a great job and fit the role perfectly. The story is just perfect and it’s really nice to see how well it turned out on screen. Nicholas Sparks’ stories have always touched the hearts of the audience. One of the things I learned before I became an author is that you have to write it so well that people cannot see all your work. Nicholas Sparks makes it all seem effortless and he does it over and over again and I can tell you, as someone who writes every day, you really have to love it and you can tell that Nicholas loves his audience.
