When “Punk’d” first started back in 2003 with Ashton Kutcher as its host, fans fell in love– fans loved to see their favorite celebrities made fun of. Sadly, the show was canceled in 2007, because celebrities began to lose their surprise when Ashton pulled a prank on them. However, MTV has brought the show back from the dead with a new twist. The new “Punk’d” premiered on March 29th with Justin Bieber as its host. However, Justin will not be the permanent host of the new series like Ashton was. Now, there will be different celebrities hosting each episode.
The celebrity hosts are said to range from Justin Bieber to Hayden Panettiere. Although Ashton is no longer the host of the show, he still plays a part as the executive producer. The celebrities pull awesome pranks on their friends, making it a little more unexpected than when Ashton was pulling all of them. The first episode showed Justin Bieber pranking Taylor Swift, after leading her to believe they are just working together to write a song. Taylor Swift being pranked was intriguing to many fans because she is known for being very charming and coy. She was extremly shocked, but took the prank fairly well compared to past celebrities.
But, the old problem of celebrities not falling for the pranks still stands. When Justin attempted to prank Rob Dyrdek, Dyrdek picked up on the fact that he was being pranked fairly quickly. Although the show still has its flaws, switching the host every week does seem to be a good way to keep people in the dark. After the failed effort to prank Dyrdrek , however, Justin simply moved on to prank Sean Kingston.
By having younger celebrities host the show, producers are hoping to attract a different audience than before. They want to gain new fans while still bringing back those who watched “Punk’d” years ago. The show seems as if it will become very successful again like it was back then. After all, watching celebrities pull pranks on their other celebrity friends does sound like a lot of fun. As “Punk’d” returns with its new look, it will be interesting to see how many celebrities actually fall for the pranks.
