Everyone knows a teenage girl who had a crush on at least one of the Jonas Brothers sometime between 2007 and 2009. Whether it was Nick, Joe, or Kevin, any teenager will tell you they thought they were in love. Their own music, a Disney Channel show, and good looks led to their fame, but everyone knows that teenage heartthrobs never last— unless, of course, they are brought back into the spotlight. Based on society’s knowledge of the Kardashian’s, it is obvious that one does not need to be able to sing or dance to be famous. What one really needs is a reality show, and now, the Jonas Brothers have just that.
Kevin Jonas is the oldest brother, the background singer, the guitarist, and also the only married one. Back when the Jonas Brothers were popular, Kevin was always the underrated JoBro; however, that is certainly not true now. As E!’s newest hit series, “Married To Jonas” focuses primarily on Kevin and his wife, Danielle. Who would have thought the brothers’ fame would be brought back because of Kevin? The show reveals Danielle, his all-italian wife, living a normal life while being married to a Jonas Brother. Based on interviews with Danielle, she claims she had no idea who the Jonas Brothers were before she had met Kevin. How, though? She was not live under a rock. About a year later, they married, the Jonas Brothers stopped making music, and one could say the band “fell off the face of the earth.”
“Married to Jonas” shows the newlywed couple living in their New Jersey mansion. It deals with Kevin adjusting to Danielle’s 100% italian family and Danielle adjusting to the family of former heartthrobs who are about to hop back on a world tour. They struggle with thoughts about having a baby, impressing each other’s families, and allowing Danielle to adapt to the crazy, overwhelming fame.
In reality shows, cameras follow celebrities around their house and simply document their everyday lives. However, they are almost always scripted. With a reality show, one needs to be able to act how they are told to act. The problem with this new series is the actors. Lines are delivered awkwardly and the dialogue seems unnatural. One does not have to be a television expert to realize this problem. One may also notice that this show is corny. Being on a television network like E!, there are tough audiences to impress. The Jonas Brothers are used to being around the Disney Network, which has a fan base of little girls that will think anything their favorite JoBro says is cute. Now, this reality show is giving the family a chance to branch out, live more adult lives, and appeal to older audiences.
Lacking the most basic criteria of good television— being entertaining— is a huge issue that the Jonas Brothers must overcome.
“Married to Jonas” obviously would not win an Emmy or even a special award for “Best Reality Television Show,” but it is certainly fun to watch. It is especially interesting for fourteen through seventeen year old girls to be able to see how fast their teen idols grew up when it feels like just yesterday they were beginning their rise to fame. It is also interesting because people were starting to wonder what ever happened to the Jonas brothers as well as why they stopped making music. Fortunately, this show should reveal it all. A few girls may have dislike Danielle because she “stole their man,” but this show portrays she’s just lucky, and the hate she receives is solely based on envy. Based on the lives of Danielle and Kevin, along with both sides of the family, one can enjoy the show while watching them (hopefully) improve their acting. The Jonas Brothers are respected, and not enough episodes have aired for one to love or hate this show. If the directors can eventually learn to thoroughly entertain their audience, this series could become the next “Keeping Up.”
