Modern Family, the very popular American comedy on ABC, is viewed by over 12.6 million people all over the world every Wednesday night at 9 pm. Just starting its fourth season, Modern Family has already won several awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for Best Television Series. Modern Family centers around three families who are all related through Jay Prichett and his children, but they are not your typical American family. Jay is married to a woman half his age, Gloria, who also has a child, Manny. Jay’s son, Mitchell, has a male partner, Cameron, and an adopted Vietnamese daughter, Lily. Claire, Jay’s daughter, has a husband, Phil, and three average teenagers, Haley, Alex, and Luke. Everyone in this show is hilarious and the acting is phenomenal. This show is based on all the family’s experiences and there are a lot of twists and turns along the way. The families in Modern Family are not average families; the variety and strangeness of these families is what makes for an entertaining show.
Modern Family took a short break in the fall and came back with a very comical winter premiere on Wednesday, January 9th. It is New Year’s Eve in this premiere episode and Jay Prichett wants to make the night very special for his family. Jay plans for the three families to have a vacation at a “nice’’ hotel in Palm Springs. The premiere starts off with Gloria, Jay’s pregnant Colombian wife, wanting grapes to eat because of the Columbian tradition of eating grapes to make your wishes come true on New Year’s Eve. Also, Claire and Phil want to rekindle their love for each other and have some romance at the hotel. Mitchell and Cameron want to have fun the way they used to when they were younger. Back at the house, Haley, Alex, and Luke are watching Lily while the adults are on vacation. Manny is also at the house watching Lily. While at home, Haley and Alex face the difficult fact that Luke, their little brother, is growing up when he and Manny invite girls over while babysitting.
When the families arrive at the hotel, it is very old and run down even though Jay remembers it being nice back in the day. He had already made reservations for all the families to go out to dinner on New Years Eve; however, no one really wants to go to dinner and hear the same stories they always hear. While at the hotel, one of the maids tells Claire and Phil to visit the romantic hot springs out in the woods. Mitchell and Cam plan to go clubbing to make themselves feel young again. On New Years Eve, the couple usually just falls asleep, but they want to stay up all night and party this year. While at dinner, a pregnant Gloria begins to fall asleep and Jay takes her back to their room to sleep, so all of the other adults make a run for it while he is gone. Cam and Mitchell find a club full of old men, which they enjoy because it makes them feel young again, just like they had wanted. Phil and Claire go to the hot springs that the maid had told them about, and they find themselves in a sticky situation when a group of nudists join them. The scene with Claire and Phil in the hot springs with the nudists is simply hilarious. Nothing can compare to the awkward and hilarious situations that the families get themselves into.
Everyone in the three families had an interesting night to say the least. In the end, this is not an average New Year’s Eve and these families are far from normal. Modern Family is a great show and everyone should watch it. The families in this show always seem to get stuck in sticky situations, but in the end they always work together and everything turns out alright. The actors in the show are hilarious and really add some flavor to each episode. The storylines of this show are fantastic and that is what makes Modern Family a great comedy. This episode in particular is very funny because it really shows how different these families are. Modern Family will leave you laughing until your head caves in.
