There are millions of apps one can purchase on their smart phone at the App Store, and thousands of them are quiz games. But, there is one quiz game that stands out from the rest, acquiring more popularity every day: QuizUp.
After first downloading the app, one is asked to log in by email or log in through Facebook. Logging in through Facebook allows one to challenge any Facebook friends that also have the app and check their Facebook friends’ statistics.
Word game apps have been popular: Words With Friends and Ruzzle–to name a few. These games gave players the opportunity to show off their English vocabulary. Yes, QuizUp is a trivia game, but it also has “Spelling, Thesaurus, Word Definitions, and Words” topics. So, the knowledge and skill one acquired in other word games can easily be transferred to Quizup.
QuizUp stands out from the rest of the quiz apps because there are over three hundred topics to be “quizzed” on. The quiz topics consist of Arts, Business, Educational, Games, Geography, History, Lifestyle, Literature, Movies, Music, Nature, Science, Sports, and TV. After tapping on one category, the topic selection will become even more specific. For example, the topic of Lifestyle reveals sub-categories of Beer, Cars, Celebrities, Clothes, Drinks, Fashion, Food, etc. The topic of Educational includes Math, Spelling, Thesaurus, and Word Definitions. Clearly, there is a category for everyone.
QuizUp even keeps track of topics one plays the most, adding the popular topic under the category of “Favorite Topics.” A Business major could excel in the Business categories, but a Film Major could know every question under Movies.
So, how does one play this game? Click on a topic, and then hit “play now!” From there, one will be set up with a random opponent, if they haven’t challenged one of their Facebook friends. With six rounds of multiple choice questions, and ten seconds to answer each question, one obviously either loses, wins, or ties. The loser is forced to play at the same level and the winner moves up a level. Soon, the addiction kicks in.
With the ability to message and challenge friends in the app, and a multitude of topics, this game may get frustrating to some and boring to others, but the popularity of QuizUp is only growing by day.
