When most people think of Nick Campobasso they associate him with the Rebels football team as a force on both sides of the ball, and rightfully so. This past season, “Campo” (as he is known by his friends and coaches) was the starting center and defensive end for the Rebels and was one of the team’s most dominant players. He led the defense in sacks, he won the team’s “Most Outstanding Lineman Award,” and he received all-league honors.
However, what most people do not know about Campobasso is that he is equally successful on the track team throwing shot put and discus. He ranks third overall in school history in indoor shot put and just recently, on May 4, propelled himself to seventh overall in school history in the discus, throwing 126’3”.
Campobasso enters his final season with Walpole track as the 21 ranked thrower in the state. He had a very successful winter season in indoor track where he placed fifth in the Division 3 finals by throwing 47’2” and where he hit his personal record on January 28 throwing 48’9”. His record of 48’9” gives him the third farthest throw in indoor shot put in the school’s history.
Campobasso finished his final season of indoor track this winter placing 20th at the All-State meet throwing 46’2”. He was the first Walpole shot putter at all states since 2000. Campobasso puts a lot of time and effort into working out to get stronger and constantly practices perfecting his throwing motion to improve himself technically.
“It feels good to be one of the top throwers in school history. [Shot put] is something I have put a lot of time and effort into and I’m glad that it paid off in the long run,” said Campobasso.
Campobasso started throwing mainly because of the encouragement he received from his football coach Barry Greener.
“I spend a lot of the winter and spring seasons in the weight room training for football, so I decided to take up shot put since the lifting is basically the same,” Campo said. Campobasso’s dedication in the weight room is a definite reason for his success in not only shot put but football as well.
This spring season of outdoor track will be Nick’s last season of his throwing career. Although he could compete at the collegiate level, he is attending Norwich University next year to play football.
Campobasso said, “I’m going to miss shot put a lot next year but I’m not done yet. Hopefully I’ll be able to break some of my own records before it’s all wrapped up.”
