After kicking off their season with a win over Norwood, Walpole Girls Track were defeated 64-31 by the Wellesley Raiders on Dec. 22, 2016 in their meet at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.
Key points for Walpole came from senior Emily Martin, who placed 1st in the 1000m, junior Hannah Perkins who placed 1st in the 600m, senior Stephanie Forester who placed 2nd in the 1 mile, and senior Kelsey Mazzocca who placed 2nd in the 55m Hurdles. Sophomores Camille LoGiudice and Caroline McGrath also took 2nd and 3rd in the two mile run.
“I think the team battled strongly against a very competitive team and I’m proud of the display we put on,” said Perkins.
Walpole’s shot putters, sophomore Gabrielle McGrath, senior Bridget Gill, and sophomore Katy Langenhorst also brought in vital points that helped keep Walpole’s spirits alive as they won 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively. This sweep was Walpole’s only one of the night.
“I’m so proud of the team, especially because everyone set personal records,” said Langenhorst.
However, Walpole could not hold up against a strong team of Wellesley sprinters, for the Raiders cleanly swept the 55m Dash and the 300m. In addition, Wellesley also took all the points in the High Jump.
Sophomore Erin Regan, who ran the 55m race, said “The competition level was very high today. In the future we just need to focus on practicing hard to improve and the results will show.”
After the Lady Rebels failed to claim another victory in the 4×200 with a time of 1:54.90 against Wellesley’s 1.54.04. With the meet already decided, both Wellesley and Walpole opted to cut the 4×400. Throughout the night, Wellesley took first place in eight out of eleven events, which ultimately pushed them to an victory.
The team hopes to put the loss behind them as they head into their next meet against Natick tonight. Senior captain Michaela Redmond said, “I am proud of the team for putting in their best efforts today, despite the score. I know we will only improve from here on out and I can’t wait for the rest of the season.”
