Eddie Dietel, a junior at Walpole High School has begun a unique venture: Dietz Eats. Dietel has embarked on a unique culinary journey by starting a food review Instagram account. His Instagram platform, @dietz_eat101, has over 240 followers who eagerly anticipate his humorous take on local fast food joints.
What sets Dietz Eats apart is not just the hilarious commentary but also the collaborative effort behind the scenes that some may not be aware of. While Dietel spearheads the operation, he relies on the assistance of two fellow Walpole seniors, Jake Lania and Owen McKenna, in bringing Dietz Eats to life.
The 240 and counting followers eagerly devour Dietel’s videos which often feature “star guests” from Walpole. Each review video takes place at the chosen restaurant, consumed among laughter and banter. The video reviews culminates in Dietel’s rating out of 10, but each review begins with an introductory clip of Dietel and his motto, “best mouth in mass”.
“Dave Portnoy reviewed Crisp in Walpole and we had made the account before he did, so he got me to post my first video— we thought it would be pretty funny,” Dietel said.
The intent behind making these videos, according to Dietel, is simply for fun but work is required to get the videos uploaded. Eddie, Jake and Owen divide the workload, each with individual tasks.
“I’d say Owen does most of the work just because editing isn’t easy and requires some skill, and he does a pretty good job,” Dietel said.
Lania helps runs the account and takes suggestions for new places to review. The trio has reviewed places such as Five Guys, Jersey Mike’s and SmashBurger. As for the choice of guests in their videos, Dietel looks for members of the Walpole community with a good sense of humor who are comfortable in front of the camera.
“It mainly goes by who the people want to see and people who we think would be good on camera,” Dietel said.
Dietel’s favorite video to make was the first-ever Dietz Eats review, Raising Canes, because it was something new and exciting. Looking ahead, Dietel plans to expand their reviews to include more local establishments rather than chains once the page grows a little bit.
“Once the page grows a little bit I do plan on doing more local reviews and try to help them get some customers,” Dietel said.
Through humor, Eddie Dietel, Jake Lania and Owen McKenna are making the local community laugh one review at a time. As they continue to grow, their journey promises to be both entertaining and delicious.
