The holidays are coming around which means it’s pie season. Making and eating pie is a tradition for most families’ holiday gatherings. It is pretty rare not to see a large pie on the dessert table in any household. However, the hardest decision is deciding which pie to bring to a dinner. I wanted to try a variety of pies for the upcoming holiday season and I wanted to give my opinion on which pie would be the best option to bring to any celebration.
Pumpkin pie
Pumpkin pie is an iconic holiday dessert . Pumpkin pie has a thick crumbly crust with a moist pumpkin custard. It is made with many spices like nutmeg, cinnamon and pumpkin spice that really emulate the holiday season. The flavorful pie is a staple for the dessert table and is even better with a dollop of homemade whipped cream.
Cranberry pie
Everyone needs a seasonal tart flavored pie like cranberry pie. Cranberry pie has a thick crust with a saucy sweet cranberry jelly on top. Many people make their cranberry pies differently, however, in order to avoid a sour filling you can try adding honey or any type of sweetener to fix the sourness. Sometimes the cranberries on top can be overpowering and make the pie not enjoyable. So it really depends on what pie you are getting and how it is made.
Apple pie
Apple Pie is another essential pie for the dessert table. Arguably, the best apple pies are the ones with the thickly cut granny smith apple slices on the top layer. Some bakers make this pie by having the apples cooked inside with the crust while others pre-cook the apples and then put it on top, to double cook the apples and make them golden brown. The texture inside depends on which way you choose to make it. I think apple pie is best when the apples are not too soft but also not too hard. It is really important to be able to differentiate between the slices; you do not want a pile of mush as your filling.
Pecan pie
I strongly dislike nuts in desserts, so pecan pie would probably be on the bottom of the list for the best pie. I personally believe that pecans do not belong in a pie. A pie should not be crunchy and nutty, but should be sweet and soft. However I do like the molasses and brown sugar in pecan pie. I feel that pecan pie is either loved or hated by people.
Despite all the pies being good options, pumpkin pie is the superior pie. It is consistently good no matter who is making it. The flavor in pumpkin pie is strong and exceptional. It is also the face of the dessert table. I can not imagine a holiday without a warm pumpkin pie. Nevertheless, bringing any pie to a holiday is a good idea, pie connects people and is a very important aspect to the holidays.
