Since the beginning of construction in November of 2024 much has changed at Walpole High School. There are some definite benefits to the construction such as a new fieldhouse with more space for sporting events, many new parking spots and a science wing renovation. In which most students are quite excited about, even if not able to witness the final product.
While most do not find themselves directly impacted, some feel annoyed about the distraction it imposes during the school day.
The parking spots tend to create the most problems for students. Although some students could argue that the noise could affect them, there is only a minimal amount created by the workers and trucks.
“Recently, my parking spot at the high school had to be moved due to the construction happening in front of the Plimpton building. It makes getting to school a bit inconvenient and is probably my biggest issue with the construction,” WHS student Kiera Connors said.
The new fieldhouse will prove to be a benefit for athletes at WHS. It will be ready to host MIIA tournament games and be prepared for our town’s sports needs with the inclusion of regulation-size basketball and volleyball courts, two separate PE teaching stations, an indoor track, office space for the Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer and space for Walpole Media.
“An indoor track would make everything so much better and safer,” WHS student Ian Roddy said.
Students agree that the school could use some updating since multiple facilities lack amenities that could be put to use. The school is also getting gifted with new buildings such as a greenhouse.
“I believe that additions to the school are long overdue. In my opinion, our gym especially needs to be redone, and the additional parking spots will make parking easier for students and teachers,” WHS student Kostantin Brennan said.
“Although it doesn’t seem like much now, the school will be a lot better than it is now when construction wraps up.”
Overall, based on student opinion, the construction seems to be worth the annoying side effects like loud sounds and longer walks.
