On April 3, 2026, the hit psychological drama movie, “The Drama” was released to theaters by A24. “The Drama” was written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli. The film stars renowned actress Zendaya as Emma Harwood and Robert Pattinson as Charlie Thompson. Zendaya is known from her feature in the “Spider-Man” film series and “Euphoria”, and Robert Pattinson who is known for his presence in the “Twilight” film series and “The Batman”.
The movie debuted with an estimated $28 million worldwide. Screen writers provided a little amount of details before the movie was released. The trailer left many questioning what the story line was about. It also set a certain tone of the movie and it made it seem as though the film was a comedy. The trailer gave a misleading impression of what the movie was actually like.
“Flirting with complex themes, “The Drama” walks a tonal tightrope with impressive poise thanks to career-highlight performances by Robert Pattinson and Zendaya,” Rotten Tomatoes said.
The movie, considered a romantic comedy and a drama, makes one question their own morals and the pressure surrounding marriage. “The Drama” starts off with the perfect meeting of two people, Charlie, played by Pattinson approaches Emma, played by Zendaya, in a coffee shop and they fell in love from there. Their relationship starts off almost quintessential and soon develops into a planned wedding. While testing out food for the wedding with a group of friends, a secret was discovered about Emma’s past. This causes Charlie to rethink his relationship with Emma and whether he really knew what kind of person he was marrying. Tension rises and Emma’s past seems to hold more weight than the couple’s future. Charlie’s character experiences unbearable discomposure the entire wedding week. When the wedding day arrives, the couple’s pressure seems to be heightened and the shocking truth comes out about both partners in the relationship.
A24 showcases another film that makes the audience question their beliefs. With an unexpected turn of events, the movie showcased an edgy story with dark themes. While some consider the film as aesthetic and cinematic, others argue the film overlooks the harsh topic of gun violence by highlighting the characters’ involvement with guns. The film made an uncomfortable situation seem almost reasonable. It focuses on how strong relationships are and if that can be broken by one’s past. A24 presents another movie that creates this feeling of uncomfortableness for the audience to experience.
The movie brought in so much interest because of the intriguing cast. Both Pattinson and Zendaya had outstanding performances. Charlie’s character embodied how almost every individual feels in a difficult situation, while Emma made one feel empathy and remorse for her. The cast essentially held the movie together, especially with such a questionable storyline. Although the movie offered a unique storyline, it was very insensitive towards certain topics. Emma’s background with gun violence was inconsiderate to victims of gun violence. Her character made her past actions seem comical and comprehensible.
“The Drama” has created great division between viewers, with romanticism about such a delicate topic. While some believe it to exaggerate the struggles of marriage, others see it as the harsh reality of adulthood. In order to understand the complexities of the movie, A24 compels the audience to ask themselves a question. Are people capable of change, or should we hold them against their dark past?
