As Walpole High School Athletics begin their spring sports seasons, the Walpole community and athletes alike are excited to see what the 2026 season brings. Spring teams at WHS including baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, golf and track, are all looking to compete and win in their conferences. After months of off season training and preseason practices, athletes at WHS are eager to compete.
On Monday, April 6, the Lady Timberwolves softball team opened their season against the Braintree Wamps. Walpole fell short 3-6 as they start to rebuild after losing six of their starters from last season. Despite the loss, the Timberwolves had many standouts. Senior captain Grace Todd hit a double and fellow captain Caitlin Baker had a triple. Additionally, junior Abby Riley recorded a homerun and a single. The Timberwolves bounced back from their loss and defeated Milton 11-2 on Wednesday, April 8.
On Wednesday, April 6, the reigning Division II State Champions led off their season with a winning performance against the Milton Wildcats. The baseball team took the win in a close game, coming out on top with a score of 8-7. Pitching was split for Walpole with senior Landon Lippsett pitching four innings with five strikeouts, junior Owen Aikens pitching one inning and sophomore Blake Pileski pitching 1.2 innings in relief with three strikeouts. To close the game, junior Matt Lencioni came in for the final to secure the win. The Timberwolves were down 5-0 going into the bottom of the sixth, when momentum slowly shifted and the Timberwolves put themselves on the board as junior Shane Harrington reached first base on a walk and later stole home on a passed ball. In his second at-bat of the inning, Harrington singled, scoring two runs, giving the Timberwolves the lead. Senior Ryan MacDonald stepped in key moments to help the Timberwolves to their victory. McDonald had two singles in the sixth inning and scored a run.
Boys lacrosse: On Thursday, April 2, the boys lacrosse team defeated Milton 11-5. The Timberwolves took to Turco Field and showed a strong performance all around. Senior attackman Micheal Conners was a standout, scoring four goals and contributing one assist. To follow the attack, senior Jack Webb scored two goals and had two assists. Additionally, senior midfielder Dillon Needham finished with a total of two goals and an assist.
Girls lacrosse: On Tuesday, March 31, the girls lacrosse team defeated the Braintree Wamps, 17-5. Senior captain Ava MacLean led the way to the win with five goals for the Timberwolves. Freshman goalie Lila Zaurak dominated the Timberwolves net, leaving the Wamps scoreless for three consecutive quarters. Additionally, freshman Ainsley Kelleher scored her first varsity goal to help the Timberwolves secure their win.
Boys track: On Wednesday, April 15, the boys track team defeated Needham 95-41 and tied Brookline 68-68. Senior Luke Zahurak made his season debut in the two mile, running 9:32, securing his first place win. Senior Sawyer Regan competed in both the 400m hurdles, recording a time of 59.32 seconds, and high jump, reaching 6′ 0″. Seniors Matt Nealon, Brady Thomas and Griffin McCarthy, along with sophomore Robert Cameron, competed in the 4x100m, winning the event with a time of 44.79 seconds. Senior Nick Demelo was a standout in shotput, throwing 48′ 11.5″, and discus, with 134′ 5″, winning both events.
Girls Track: On Wednesday, April 15, the girls track team hosted a tri-meet. Although the Timberwolves lost to both Needham 69-67 and Brookline 75-61, many athletes had standout performances. Senior Caisa Byerly, freshman Leah Alves, freshman Maria Botsaris, sophomore Sydney Dias and freshman Riya Kalra, all won in their respective events, scoring five points each. Byerly scored the most points with 16 points between the 100 meter hurdles, shot put and high jump.
Boys Tennis: On Thursday, April 2, the boys tennis team defeated Milton 5-0 in their home-opener. Senior captain Stephen Jung played in first singles and won 6-0, 6-0. Junior Dillon Blaquiere won 6-0, 6-0 at second singles and senior Brady Goldman won 6-2, 6-2 at third singles. The first doubles pair, senior Matthew Anastasi and junior Luke Moses, won 6-0, 6-0. Finally, the second doubles pair, senior Pravith Sivakumar and junior Ramu Muthukurappan, won 6-0, 6-0. The boys have continued to dominate their opponents with a perfect record this far.
Girls Tennis: On Monday, April 6, the girls tennis team took on Braintree in their home opener. Although the girls team lost 4-1, senior captain Eleni Margetis won her match 6-7 (7-5) Tie Break, 6-1. 10-5. The team welcomed a new coach this year as former WHS student, Leo Ringler took on the position as head coach. Ringler had his first career win on April 15 when the girls defeated Weymouth 4-1.
Girls Golf: In the 2025 season, the girls golf team were South Sectional Champions and placed third in the MIAA State Championship. On Tuesday, April 7, the Timberwolves defeated the Braintree Wamps 6-0. All varsity competitors and alternates won their individual matches. The Timberwolves are led by senior captains Tori Adams, Adri Shaughnessy and Gretchen Connelly.
The start of the 2026 spring season has already shown the talent and determination of WHS athletes. Across multiple sports the Timberwolves have delivered impressive performances and have had key wins.
