As the students of Walpole woke up the morning of March 15, they went along their merry business — that is, until local news, Fox 25 Boston showcased WHS students as, “brats” on their morning editorial segment: “Let It Rip.” A group of WHS students called “Students Opposing Surveillance” currently oppose the installation of security cameras in the hallways of the school, and news commentator Doug “Virgin Boy” Goudie was simply not in agreement with students standing up for their beliefs.  V.B. unleashed a condescending hatred for these students. So, here is their rebuttal.

Goudie attained the nickname “Virgin Boy” on The Howie Carr Show, where he was the former producer before moving on to Fox 25 Boston. Howie Carr branded Goudie’s still-standing nickname when Goudie promoted himself as a cultured journalist, but Carr exposed his superficial wisdom as a falsity.

Carr called Goudie an uncultured, “Virgin Boy,” who falsely distinguished himself as a worldy, sagacious reporter. And Voilà — years later — Doug Goudie embraces his pathetic nickname — a mark of his own immature ignorance of the world — as a sign of fraternal pride and moved to Fox 25 as an editorial personality on the morning show.

On March 15, Goudie said, “Whenever kids do get involved, [in political on-goings] I rarely find that I’m doing anything other than laughing at them.”

Yes, Goudie, having students getting involved in political happenings is downright stupid! Why promote political involvement at a young age, when kids can wait until they’re older and eventually turn out like you — a “Virgin Boy” commentator who brings nothing extremely insightful to the world of morning news.

Also, it’s not as if these “kids” are uneducated, illiterate students. Three of the main fighters against the installation of the cameras (seniors Sean Herlihy, Ross Bubly, and junior Jon Kelland) are in honors and AP classes. So, why are you laughing at students that are the future? These “brats” aren’t brats at all — they’re bright students who are brave enough to take a stand in something they believe in, even when obnoxious (and unfortunately famous) news commentators rip on them.

Not only is Goudie opposed to students getting involved in political issues, but he also does not like creativity. Goudie doesn’t like the student-made group name “S.O.S:” “Students Opposing Surveillance,” but as he makes fun of the name, he comes up with his very own “SHUT IT: Students Holding Up True Information Togetherness.” While the comment seems amusing in terms of ridiculing the futility of acronyms, the joke ultimately fails — both because of his stupid acronym and because commanding civilized students to “SHUT IT!” for speaking out in a civilized, democratic way is hypocritical.  As an editorial commentator, shouldn’t you value individuals who stand up for what they believe in? Or, was Carr right? Maybe you are still too callow to know how to recognize the wise thing to do — listen to their arguments.  You are too busy screaming “SHUT IT!” like a insecure gym teacher or cop who feels empowered by making teenagers look stupid.  Very mature.

Also,what in the hell does your acronym even mean, “Holding Up True Information Togetherness?” Knowing English does seem to be a necessity when being a newscaster. At least try to use the joke meaningfully.

While Jon Kelland, a member of the S.O.S group finds that the cameras are unnecessary and wouldn’t “stop an intruder from entering the school,” Goudie takes his quote out of context. Goudie goes on a rant about how the cameras would provide law enforcement with, “INFORMATION, SON!”

Goudie — why won’t you just stop talking and listen for just a minute? Kelland did not say that the cameras wouldn’t provide information. He said they wouldn’t stop an INTRUDER, SON! If the high school does install more cameras, they would not prevent an intruder — just as they did not stop Adam Lanza.

Lastly, closing up his argument against Walpole High students, Goudie stated that the added bonus of the cameras would be to “keep an eye on these brats.” Oh yes! You’ve got it! We must keep an eye on these potically active students that are standing up for what they believe in — also known as brats.

These members are not children crying when they don’t get their way, they are poised adults who are trying to protect their right granted to them in the Constitution.

The group started not as a rebel against administration, but as a fight to protect their rights. SOS has no qualms with Goudie’s opinion; it’s just his hypocrisy and lack of knowledge as an editorial journalist that hurts. But if that’s his thing —  maybe he  should let it rip on the next big “Virgin Boy” scoop: teenagers wearing hats at school! Such brats! Or, maybe — just maybe — you should grow up,  and get ENLIGHTENED, SON!

Goudie relentlessly belittles the students who are opposed to the security cameras, but why? Because they’re not as old as you they can’t have an opinion. Your argument is poorly researched, and at some points is completely off topic of what has been said by the members of the S.O.S group.
