Netflix Releases Hit New Series “Shadow and Bone”
Adaptations of books for television do not always have a good track record among fans, but one new show on Netflix is here to change that. “Shadow and Bone,” a new Netflix original, has become an instant hit ever since its release in April, and it fully deserves the love and attention it has been given.
Based on Leigh Bardugo’s hit fantasy world from her two series “Shadow and Bone” and “Six of Crows,” “Shadow and Bone” brings viewers into the Grishaverse, a complex world filled with political tension, magic, and lovable characters. The series follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), who finds out that she is the long awaited saint, the Sun Summoner, and that she must destroy the dangerous region The Fold that divides the world. She finds herself surrounded by competing interests, from her best friend Mal (Archie Reneaux) who tries to reunite them and save Alina from the sinister General Kirigan (Ben Barnes), also known as the Darkling. Alongside this plot enters the Crows from the “Six of Crows” book series, featuring Kaz (Freddy Carter), Inej (Amita Suman) and Jesper (Kit Young), who plot to kidnap Alina for their own interests.
Fans of the books have been particularly thrilled by the series, particularly with the accuracy of the show compared to the books. “Shadow and Bone” remains more faithful to the books than other shows of a similar nature, with some notable exceptions such as the introduction of the Crows. The casting for the series is superb, with each actor embodying their character perfectly. While there are of course some deviations from the plot of the book series, “Shadow and Bone” remains mostly true to the books, an impressive feat.
However, for those not familiar with the books, “Shadow and Bone” can prove confusing, especially since the show contains characters from both Grishaverse book series. Many of the details surrounding the plot are hard for viewers unfamiliar with the books to understand, such as the politics that are so crucial to the plot and the magic of the Grisha. While all viewers will find this series undeniably entertaining, it could definitely be confusing for those not familiar with the books.
Additionally, the popularity of “Shadow and Bone” has left many fans already asking for a second season, and with good reason. The series ended with many storylines unfinished, leaving room for season two. Despite the unfinished nature of the story, the series still had a satisfying conclusion, but that satisfaction could easily be dampened if the show does not get renewed. However, “Shadow and Bone” has been an instant success, remaining at the top of Netflix’s charts ever since its release, so thankfully a second season seems likely at this point.
Overall, “Shadow and Bone” certainly deserves the hype and attention that it has been given since its release. With its engaging plot, characters, and its faithfulness to the books, the series has become an instant hit among fans. With a promising future for a second season, “Shadow and Bone” will undoubtedly remain a fan favorite for years to come.
