There have been certain expectations of people for many years. You always have to look a specific way or act in a specific way to fit the standards. These society norms have had a very negative toll on the way girls and guys alike have felt about themselves. Many things are going to affect the way you feel about the way you see yourself. Things that contribute to this are social media, how everyone else looks, and so many other factors. No matter what happens there will always be another expectation. Back in the 1900s, women were supposed to be “slim and small”—now the expectation has changed to be more “curvy”. As for boys, they are always expected to be “big and muscular”. All you have to do is to remember how to conquer these expectations, and be yourself no matter what. Although all of these standards are held, regardless of what size you still have to be confident in your body and remember that no one is perfect.
Being confident in your own skin is an essential quality to have. Many teens feel more confident about themselves after working out or wearing certain clothes. “When I finish a cross country race, I feel proud of my body for finishing” stated a Freshman from WHS. Working out has a very positive effect on teens because of how severely it boosts your self esteem and health. Many students rely on working out. We believe that working out has a very positive impact on your own body image, because of the endorphins that are released when physical activity goes on. Another element that can influence your perception of your body image is the kinds of clothes you wear. Some people wear baggy clothes and some people wear fitted clothes. Multiple current feminine clothing trends can deteriorate our confidence because they are very form fitting or revealing. As for masculine clothing trends they are expected to wear sweats or shorts and t-shirts. Confidence in your body is not about wearing tank tops, it is about feeling good and proud of yourself. Despite what you wear, you have to feel confident in every part of your body.
Nobody is perfect, each person has their own flaws. I have never seen anyone who is flawless and can guarantee you haven’t either. Looking perfect isn’t something to try and achieve because it is impossible. “I think no one is perfect because of beauty standards for boys and girls because everyone has different views for how they want to be.” a freshman from WHS remarked.
The public’s idea of perfection is different everywhere; therefore, it is unthinkable to accomplish. Body image is something you have to keep a positive mindset about because without confidence you can severely hurt your mental or physical health. Regardless of what size you are and what your body shape is, you should always remember that the way you look at your body should be in a positive sense.
