Many people have argued whether or not teenagers should be allowed to participate in trick or treating. This holiday has always been geared towards younger kids with an added expectation that once you reach your teen years you stop dressing up and getting candy. Some people even refuse to give teens candy when they come up to their door. However, teens should be allowed to trick or treat for as long as they would like as it gives them a final sense of childhood and is a fun activity to do with friends.
Some people want to be able to get candy with friends, rather than going to a Halloween party. It is fun to be able to continue doing things that you have done in your childhood, and although there are many Halloween activities, trick or treating is a classic tradition. Also, being able to dress up in a Halloween costume lets one reminisce on their childhood, and it is fun to see what other people think of your costume while you are trick or treating.
One of the only opportunities for one to get free candy is on Halloween, and this is even a safer activity for older kids trick or treating as they are able to make sure the house and candy are safe, and can even keep an eye on the little ones that do not have a guardian with them. As a result, younger kids have someone to look up to, and they will not feel insecure about trick or treating once they are older because they have seen older kids doing it at one point.
According to Evolve Adolescent Behavioral Health, out of about 850 people asked when they stopped trick or treating, 25% said they stopped at age 12, This does not allow a lot of time for people to go trick or treating if the majority of them stop at 12.
Some people who give out candy may want to give out candy to just the younger kids to give them the full experience of Halloween. This makes sense, but people should not be stopped from receiving candy so other people can get candy instead of them. It is unfair to just allow the younger kids to get candy because Halloween is not just a holiday for the little kids.
Halloween should be a holiday that everyone can enjoy and be able to receive free candy from. Teenagers should not be kept from their experiences just because people think they are too old to be dressing up or going around to houses and getting candy.
