Music is one of the few amusements that bring people together. Particularly, the Grammys are one of the most admired award shows for those in the music industry. Originated in 1958, the Grammys recognize artists, talent and dedication throughout the year. There are multiple categories for musicians to be nominated for each year including: Best New Artist, Song of the Year, Album of the Year, etc. On Feb. 4, Trevor Noah hosted the 66th annual Grammy Awards with performances by SZA, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, U2 and many more.
Several musicians were rewarded for their exceptional presentation throughout 2023. Singers and bands such as Boygenius, Metallica, Julian Marley, Taylor Swift and Victoria Monet won awards. Furthermore, during one of Swift’s speeches she announced a new album that will be released April 19th called “The Tortured Poets Department”. Alongside Swift, SZA was the most nominated artist of the night and won three awards. Not only that but Miley Cyrus won multiple awards for her song “Flowers” during this eventful evening. Barbie the Album won the trophy for Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media and “What Was I Made For?” by Billie Eilish and Finneas won Best Song Written For Visual Media. Oppenheimer by Ludwig Goransson won the Score Soundtrack For Visual Media trophy. Zach Bryan and Kacey Musgraves’ song “I Remember Everything” won Best Country Duo/Group Performance. Michelle Obama won best Spoken Word Album which most people did not know she was even nominated for. With over 90 awards given out, each artist demonstrated a great amount of effort in their work.
Although the Grammys can be filled with excitement and joy however, there are some things that make the viewers as well as the singers/songwriters displeased with the outcome. Many people were disappointed by the fact that Lana Del Ray and Olivia Rodrigo did not get an award. Various individuals were also upset about the fact that Travis Scott did not get a trophy because of how well loved his album “Utopia” is. Additionally, there have been multiple complaints through social media about Noah Kahan not winning anything. Despite such dissatisfaction, every artist is said to be greatly appreciative and thankful for even getting nominated.
The Grammy awards are also filled with exquisite productions from various musicians. This year, the performances were heartwarming and nostalgic. A touching presentation by Luke Combs and his idol Tracy Chapman singing “Fast Car” left the crowd speechless. When Joni Mitchell appeared on stage later to sing, despite being 80 years old, she did an excellent job and the crowd started tearing up. Moreover, Billy Joel had his first performance in over 30 years with his new song “Turn The Lights Back On,” which was a memorable moment for everyone who experienced it. Olivia Rodrigo sang her new hit “Vampire” and Travis Scott sang three of his new songs from “Utopia”. In addition to all these extraordinary acts, musicians such as Burna Boy, Jon Batiste and Stevie Wonder displayed uplifting entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Overall, numerous performances occurred over the course of the event, and each had their own flair.
The 66th Grammy Awards was a very successful and amusing event. Music creators from all over the world came together to celebrate each other’s accomplishments; All in all, memories were made and music careers were changed.
