Over the course of 10 years, the Broadway musical “Hamilton,” written by Lin Manuel Miranda, has effectively retained its popularity. The musical has become beloved by fans all over the world with its catchy songs and educational storyline. “Hamilton” is about the life of Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton. Coming to Boston on Sept. 23, right after it hit the theaters for its tenth year anniversary, “Hamilton” is a musical worth seeing.
Miranda became inspired by the biography “Alexander Hamilton,” written by Ron Chernow and started writing the musical in 2008. With the help of Chernow’s book, the first song, “Alexander Hamilton,” debuted at a White House poetry event when Miranda was asked to present something from his other musical “In the Heights.” Multiple high ranking people, including the president at the time, Barack Obama, praised his performance. After years of hard work, “Hamilton” was completed in 2015.
The musical first appeared at the Public Theater on Jan. 20, 2015, and rapidly grew a fan base. Not long after it premiered, “Hamilton” went to Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway on July 13. In February of 2016, about a year after the musical first showcased, “Hamilton” won the Best Musical Theater Grammy Award for its hit songs like “Satisfied” and “Wait for it.” Additionally, in April, the musical won the Pulitzer Prize for drama and in June, won 11 Tony Awards. The production’s fame caught the eye of many well known celebrities including Beyonce, Emma Watson and Jay-Z.
Due to Broadway briefly shutting down in 2020, on July 3, “Hamilton” was released on Disney Plus in the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Originally filmed in 2016 for theatrical purposes, the show was finally released to the public. Now that people could watch the musical in the comfort of their own homes, its popularity expanded even further. Going to see a Broadway production can be extremely expensive; therefore, showcasing the musical online can widen the fan base.
Five years after the film was released on Disney Plus, for the musical’s tenth anniversary, “Hamilton” was re-released to movie theaters with special “Hamilten” interviews at the beginning of the musical. The production’s introduction to theaters started a lot of new social media trends. Some of these trends include dressing up as Hamilton and has become a funny thing for fans to partake in. Moreover, the musical is coming to Boston from Sept. 23 to Nov. 2 at the Citizens Opera House.
“Hamilton” is a musical that continues to stay relevant throughout the years since its premiere. It is adored and respected by numerous people and for a good reason. Miranda and his coworkers put a great amount of effort into the creation of “Hamilton,” which definitely shows. The performance that the actors put on each night has become a global sensation and prolongs its fame year after year.
