After Halloween, many often start decorating for Christmas and getting ready for Hanukkah, skipping past Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a smaller holiday that people disregard because it focuses on family and gratitude. Some also do not like the holiday because of the history. The holiday could be seen as the celebration of Native American genocide and conquest.
Although many believe that Thanksgiving is a not very meaningful holiday, it focuses on the celebrations of family, gratitude and the amicable relationship we gained with the Native Americans. Most people celebrate by having huge family gatherings, delicious food, watching the Macy’s Day Parade and watching football.

Some examples of Thanksgiving foods can include: turkey, stuffing, mac and cheese, rolls, potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, green beans, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, a variety of pies, stuffing and cornbread.
Pies are a traditional dessert that come in many different varieties. Most of the time there is an assortment of pies that are served for dessert on Thanksgiving, with most common flavors including cherry, pumpkin, apple, chocolate cream, pecan, vanilla cream and blueberry. These pies are delicious when they are homemade or store bought, that could be enjoyed year round, but especially on Thanksgiving. Pies are a traditional treat that many families make for the holiday.
Another popular activity that many do on Thanksgiving is watch football. The two teams that always play on Thanksgiving are the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. The Lions started playing on the holiday in 1934 and the Cowboys joined them in 1966. This varies from regular season football, as these teams do play in the original season, but it has always been the tradition to have the specific two teams play on Thanksgiving day. This year the Bengals and the Ravens are also playing on Thanksgiving, in addition to the Cowboys and Lions.
The Macy’s Day Parade is a parade that is shown on television or people could watch along the streets in New York City. This parade is very commonly watched and enjoyed because of the variety of floats, music, dancing and Santa arriving as the finale. Some floats incorporate popular TV shows, commercials, broadway plays and the joy of Santa coming at the end, which entices a lot of the younger children.
