The New-York punk band, Lip Critic, released their third studio album, “Theft World,” on May 1, 2026, being significantly more successful than 2024’s “Hex Dealer,” their second studio album.
Contrary to what the title may suggest, the album is not about theft and committing crimes.
The most popular song from the album, initially released on Feb. 10, 2026, ended up being their lead single, “Legs in a Snare.” This production contains a heavy snare drum and 808’s and scratchy vocals by vocalist Bret Kaser. “Legs in a Snare” depicts Kaser in a difficult situation of love where he is in so much love with someone that it is affecting them negatively, causing them to enter a state of obsession.
“Oh, it’s your love pushing me off the roof! / I got my hands out reaching for the balconies / And my reflections in windows look just like the flip book,” Kaser said.
The second single of the album, “Jackpot,” was released on March 11, 2026. Kaser compares his emotions to a gambling addiction; they are losing everything about themselves to support an attachment to something or someone.
“Talon” is the third single on the album, initially released on April 9, 2026. A talon is the sharp claw of a bird, used primarily for them to catch their prey. In the song, Kaser laments that the prey is too far for them to catch.
Lip Critic will be going on a U.S. tour on May 25th, 2026 titled “The Theft Destiny Tour” with Flatwounds and BEJALVIN, who will also be performing his newly-released album: “PLANETARY DEVASTATION.” Coincidentally, both artists released a track titled “Shoplifting” in their newest album. The Lip Critic account made Instagram posts proclaiming that their song is better as a joke as a way to provoke BEJALVIN. Lip Critic’s 8th track, “Shoplifting,” compares the emotions of someone shoplifting with their hope and mentality: they see something they want but they cannot achieve legally. The solution would be to steal, but then they would have to hold onto the guilt of shoplifting, resulting in them rethinking their decision before acting upon them.
“Theft World” by the punk band, Lip Critic, gains attention for how they are able to depict their emotions in forms of crime and the remarkable writing and production done by the members. The album drifts away from the negative emotions, leaving rage, anger, sadness, guilt and temptations in the past. It is able to stay unique in their own way, their use of imagery in their songwriting is significant and makes it stand out from other common punk bands.
