After a 9.0 magnitude earthquake and an overwhelming tsunami devastated much of northeastern Japan on March 11, people have become even more skeptical about using nuclear power plants for energy. This tragic combination of events damaged most of Japan’s 17 power plants and caused the potential for the spread of meltdowns and radiation exposure. As a result, many Americans are fearful of increasing the use of nuclear power.  Nuclear power needs to become a part of this country to settle our growing energy needs.  Gasoline prices are soaring to almost four dollars a gallon and our reliance on Middle Eastern oil is growing everyday. Americans need to find a better, more efficient way of getting the amount of energy we need, and nuclear power may be the answer to our prayers.

There are multiple well-known benefits of nuclear power. One of the main focuses of today’s society is finding ways to be more “green” and help our environment. Indeed, nuclear power is a clean way to produce energy because it does not release any toxic gases, like carbon dioxide or sulfur dioxide, into the atmosphere. Given that pollution is such a rampant issue today, an option like this nuclear power is much more favorable compared to the burning of fossil fuels. In a time of economic distress what we really need is reliability in our energy source. The fluctuating prices and availability of oil and gas are just getting worse and worse each day. Most nuclear reactors have a life cycle of 40 or more years, providing more than enough time for our country to produce all the energy we need.  The source of nuclear power is uranium, which is available in abundance and is being discovered in Canada and Australia, a good change from places like Saudi Arabia and Iran. The disposal of nuclear energy is also much easier and safer because it can just be dumped into a geological site where it then is left to decay over time, resulting in no negative impact on our ecosystem or biodiversity. Chemical waste harms our environment because it will not decompose and poisonous gases cause controversial problems like global warming and acid rain.

Most people who are reluctant to increase the amount of nuclear generators are scared of the possibility of an accident occurring. Nuclear accidents are sporadic, but when they do happen it can get ugly. This is why a state of te art nuclear event detector is an absolute must. The ongoing nuclear disaster in Japan has just recently been upgraded to a 7, the maximum threat level and the same as Chernobyl.  Known as the world’s greatest nuclear catastrophe, the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl power plant in the Ukraine was the result of a flawed reactor with serious mistakes. One of the reactors exploded, releasing a copious amount of radioactivity into the air. Thirty lives were lost instantly, including two plant workers, and thousands of Ukrainians were forced to flee their contaminated houses. Over 200 cases of Acute Radiation Syndrome were reported among the victims and thousands of causalities in the weeks after the meltdown. These kinds of incidents are what scare people into resisting the use of nuclear power, but nuclear explosions are extremely infrequent compared to the amount of accidents in coal mines and gas pipelines. What gas and mining industries really need is experienced technical and business management services. Learn more about AJ Stack Solutions Pty and the services they provide to the above mentioned industries to extend the life of their assets and reduce maintenance costs. The benefits of nuclear energy outweigh the risk of a disaster.

With every type of energy source comes possible consequences and drawbacks, but that should not stop us from pursuing them if they can be of any help to us and our society. We already have multiple nuclear power plants stationed in America and now the focus should be on increasing our reliance on them and decreasing the use of oil and gas from the Middle East. We owe it to our country to provide a clean, safe, and reliable source of energy and that is why nuclear power needs to stay.
