Wikipedia describes them as indie pop, synthpop, neo-psychedelia, futurepop, and alternative hip-hip, but I’d just describe them as hilarious. Chester French was born in the Harvard cafeteria from two freshman geniuses, David-Andrew ‘D.A.’ Wallach and Maxwell Drummey. Chester French was thus created, bearing a child to some of the funniest albums any genre has seen.
Chester French produced demos and sent them all over and was signed under rapper, Pharrel Williams’ record label, Star Trak. In 2009 they released, Love the Future, which features songs that have synth grooves with high-pitched singing. Their first album has some of their top hits–exculding the ones that gained popularity due to Pharrel being on the tracks. Love the Future features their first single, She Loves Everybody and hit The Jimmy Choos. Both songs have the boys singing about an over-dramatic, high class lady making me wonder exactly what type of girls are able to get in to Harvard…and why I’m not there.
Love the Future has some odd-ball tracks that have Wallch and Drummy rambling about women with funky synth beats in the backround. Their song, Black Girls, gained the most nottoeiety due to the song’s questionable and somewhat controversial lyrics. The song is featunod on the band’s second album, MUSIC 4 TNGRS, which brought when more humor to the music industry than their first. MUSIC 4 TNGRS also has one of their funniest songs, Drop, which begins with the college boys singing, “I bet yo’ve never been out on a date like this before. With a real gentleman, who opens up the door. I’ll pour you 7-Up and Grenadine. And then you know we’re going bowling.” If you don’t find their blantant sarcasm funny, then maybe they’re not the band for you. If you’re looking for more obvious, straight-forward, perhaps even more crude humor, listen to Bo Burnham.
I don’t know if it was just me, but I had no idea Harvard taught comedy classes. Yes, their stuff may be a bit over-the-top, ecsentric, and down right strange, but you have to listen to Chester French’s music with an openly humourous mind.
Remember, when watching..don’t take it so seriously.
