Their relationship first started during the filming of The Last Song in June 2009. Miley was shedding from her Disney Channel roots, while Liam was an unknown Australian auditioning for a major role. Ten months later, the couple confirmed their relationship at their movie premiere. Their real life love story definitely made the chemistry between their two characters too surreal.
Rumors and stories that the pair were on the rocks started surfacing in 2010. In March 2011, the two were spotted just “hanging out,” but no PDA was involved. People assumed they were “taking it slow.” By December 2011, Miley and Liam attended “CNN Heroes: An All Star Tribute” in Los Angeles.
In June 2012, the Miley confirmed via Twitter that her and Liam were engaged. She said, “I’m so happy to be engaged and look forward to a life of happiness with Liam.” This confirmation sparked a frenzy in the media, and everyone was ecstatic about the seemingly perfect couple’s decision to be together forever. However, apparently forever has a different definition for some people.
In August 2012 Miley cut off her long locks for a short, pixie cut. The loss of her relationship seemed to directly correlate with the loss of her hair. Miley and Liam were on and off throughout 2012. No one seemed to be able to confirm or deny whether they were together or not.
In February 2013, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton wrote that Miley was cheating on Liam with Ed Westwick, the hunk from Gossip Girl. The rumors were in fact false, and the two were supposedly still trying to work things out.
In August 2013, Miley accompanies Liam at his movie premiere, Paranoia. But then come the VMA’s (AKA Miley’s downfall) on August 25th. Miley had the most horrifying performance of all time for viewers. Her proactive performance included suggestive moves with a foam finger and her inappropriately touching Robin Thicke—an overall shocking scene that clearly made all viewers uncomfortable People could only imagine where her and Liam’s relationship would go from there. Finally, in September, Liam and Miley officially called off their engagement. Liam was spotted kissing Mexican actress, Eiza Gonzalez, and Miley unfollowed Liam on Twitter.
So, will they get back together? Sadly, it looks like they have had their run. They have both changed a lot—and by both we mean Miley has gone a little insane and Liam has realized he can’t have a relationship with someone obsessed with twerking and exposing all you can expose in a music video. If only she never cut the hair.
