Often when listening to a Spotify or Pandora radio station, one stumbles upon a remix or cover of their favorite artist. More often than not, this is just a painful experience. Some artists butcher great tracks, such as “Everything is Embarrassing” and “Forever”, by throwing in a hodgepodge of electronic beats. Remixes are an easy outlet for artists to feed off one another’s fame in an attempt to gain public recognition. However, if their remix falls flat, their attempt at recognition can earn them the negative reputation that perhaps their bottom-feeding earned them. Prime example: there is no logical point to remixing a song like “Midnight City”, which was already mastered by M83.
On the other end of the spectrum, remixes can bring a track to a new level of appeal with the integration of electronic elements. “My Body”, an already popular song by Young the Giant, is given a renewed upbeat mood in the Two Door Cinema Club remix, proving there a possibility of a successful remix.
Hopefully after listening to this playlist, you can discern the difference between a quality remix, and a meaningless one.
